The counseling journey can be hard work. It takes courage to reach out for help — thank you for taking that important first step! I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor who has helped hold hope for clients in counseling for over 20 years. I have a master's and doctorate in counseling, which adds to the skills and support I offer. Are there issues with stress, anxiety, grief, loss, sadness, or a life transition? Are you a new or new-again parent navigating the "challenging 3's" with your child? So how can I help? As a clinical mental health counselor, I will offer you a safe space and listen without judgment. I believe that you and your story matter. I counsel from a holistic, mind-body-heart perspective that is realistic and grounded. I will help you explore strategies and coping skills that are useful and practical for you in your life.

My approach to couples/marriage counseling is to create a safe and supportive environment where both partners feel heard and understood. I use a variety of techniques to help couples identify and address underlying issues and patterns that contribute to relationship difficulties. My approach is collaborative, empathetic, and solution-focused, striving to empower couples to overcome challenges and build a fulfilling and resilient relationship.
I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:
I know when a couple is making progress when they are able to navigate challenges more effectively, strengthen their bond, and cultivate a more fulfilling and satisfying relationship.
To supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling, clients can create a weekly or monthly family meeting. During this meeting, they can discuss their feelings about their relationship, any patterns they've noticed in the previous weeks, upcoming events, and common goals they would like to achieve. This is a great way to keep the lines of communication open and work together towards a stronger and healthier relationship.
To prepare for your first couples or marriage counseling session, you can take the following steps:1. Reflect on goals and concerns: Take some time to reflect individually and as a couple on what you hope to achieve through counseling. 2. Clarify expectations: Have an open and honest discussion with your partner about what you both expect from counseling. Discuss your hopes, fears, and any reservations you may have. 3. Be open-minded: Approach counseling with an open mind and a willingness to explore new perspectives and strategies. 4. Commit to the process: Recognize that couples/marriage counseling requires time, effort, and commitment from both partners. 5. Practice empathy and communication: Make an effort to practice empathy and active listening in your interactions with your partner. 6. Manage expectations: Understand that counseling is not a quick fix and that progress may take time. Be patient with yourselves and each other as you work through challenges and setbacks.7. Consider individual therapy: In some cases, individual therapy alongside couples counseling can be beneficial, especially if there are underlying personal issues or traumas that need to be addressed.8. Take care of yourselves: Prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy balance in your life outside of counseling. By taking these steps to prepare for couples/marriage counseling, you can lay a strong foundation for a successful therapeutic journey and meaningful growth in your relationship.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
Disagreements can take a toll on your relationship, but even the closest couples will have them throughout the years. Despite relationship issues being common, though, those who experience them can attest to the fact that they’re not any less stressful.
If you and your spouse or partner are struggling to resolve your differences, seeking help from Thriveworks Counseling in Durham, NC may be the answer.
Our counselors and psychologists can facilitate discussion in a sensitive and respectful environment that enables you to come to an agreement and move forward positively with your relationship. Call our office at (919) 642-4903 today.
Did you know that many couples disagree about the same types of things? While each pair’s circumstances are unique, there are often common themes when it comes to relationship struggles. These often include, but aren’t limited to:
Of course, every relationship will have its ups and downs throughout the years. You’ll be going along just fine and an issue will pop up that throws a monkey wrench in your happiness.
This is normal, and often you’ll fix the issue together and move ahead. But, if you’re feeling like you’re starting to experience more of the “downs” than the “ups” it may be a good time to seek outside support in the form of couples counseling.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you and your spouse are considering couples therapy to address a matter. Our counselors and psychologists would be honored to facilitate your resolution (919) 642-4903.
